Whether you have a corgi or any other breed of dog, sooner than later, you will take him/her out for a run.
Before however, you get a dog, it is essential to understand how fast it can run. The same is true for corgi as well.
The question which I will answer today is, how fast can a corgi run?
Not only that, but I will also solve queries revolving around the running of corgis.
Once you go through the article below, you can decide whether you can go with your corgi for a run or not and what kind of speeds you can expect from your corgi.
How Fast Can Corgis Run?
Corgis can efficiently run at speeds up to 25 mph.
While this might sound speedier than some of the other breeds it is not the fastest.
A few other breeds are much faster, like the Afghan hound which can achieve speeds of up to 40 mph. and the Greyhound, which can achieve speeds of even 45 mph
The problem is that if your dog’s speed is too high, you will struggle to keep up as well.
That is why corgis have just about the right speed.
Once you notice corgis running, you will understand that their pattern of running is a bit different.
I will highlight the same below.
How Do Corgis Run?
Corgis use their bodies like a spring while running.
If you notice corgis running at higher speeds, you will notice that often, their front legs and rear legs overlap or touch each other.
This technique is similar to a coil spring, when corgis are in this position they jump with their back legs and stretch out their front legs to sprint forward.
This running technique of corgis is different from other breeds.
Now that you know how corgis run, it is essential to understand how far they can run as well.
Can Corgis Go On Long Runs?
Corgis are similar to sprinters. They cannot run a marathon. In a single session, they can cover up to 2 to 3 miles at max.
That too only when their health is proper.
Similarly, if you’re taking your corgi for a hike, it will cover 6 to 8 miles. However, it can cover that distance only at a moderate speed and not at a speed of 25 mph.
That is why, when you’re taking your corgi out for a run, make sure that the overall route is short.
Are Corgis Good Running Partners?
Corgis can be good running partners but under controlled conditions.
Some of the things which make the running session conducive for partners are:
Only younger corgis can be good running partners. Otherwise, puppies or older corgis will not be able to cover a large distance with you.
You can go running with your corgi only when the route is 2 to 3 miles long.
You can take your corgis with you as a running partner only when the temperature is lower than 85°F.
Otherwise, the weather will not be suitable for them.
So, if your running session meets these requirements, you can take your corgi with you as a running partner.
Is Running Bad For Corgis?
Running is only bad for corgis if their age is less than 18 months or more than seven years.
In those cases, corgis will find running uncomfortable.
Not only is running bad for corgis if the outside temperature is higher than 85°F, but also if the temperature is below freezing, once again running will be bad for the corgis.
Apart from these, running is not bad for corgis.
12 Tips To Help Your Corgis During And After A Run
There are a few tips that you can follow to make the running session comfortable for your corgi.
I will share with you the steps below.
1. Limit The Distances
You should limit the running sessions up to 3 miles at max. Anything in excess can tire out your corgi quite quickly.
If you’re planning a long-distance run, it is not a good idea to take your corgi with you.
2. Go With Newer Routes
Another problem with corgis is that if you take them on the same road, again and again, they will get bored.
In this case, they will not expend energy properly to continue on the run. Consequently, your run will turn into a walk.
If you really want to make your corgi run and expend their energy, it is a good idea to change the route often.
The changes can be pertaining to the entire track or just a part of it. However, you need to change the routes, again and again, to keep your corgi entertained.
3. Do Not Make Your Corgi Run On The Pavement
If the surface on which the corgi is running is pretty hard like pavement, the paws of the corgi will suffer the maximum shock and impact.
Over time, this will lead to deteriorating the bone health of your corgi.
This is the reason why you need to discourage your corgis from running on the pavement.
When planning a jog out as well, you have to make sure that there are no pavements.
If at all, you need to cover the pavement, it is a good idea to make your corgi walk rather than run.
4. Carry Corgi’s Food And Water With You
While taking your corgi out for a run, it is good to carry the water as well as a portable dish for your corgi.
You have to take regular dog food with you as well.
In case the corgi is excessively tired, you can feed him/her. That will help them rejuvenate.
5. Never Make Your Corgi Run Excessively
Under no circumstances should you increase the running session beyond 3 miles.
If at all, you’re far away from your home, it is a good idea to use your car.
When you do so, the corgi will not get tired beyond a point.
That is why; the health of your corgi will not get impacted as well.
6. Look Out For Signs Of Sunstroke
If your corgi is suffering from sunstroke, he/she will suffer from symptoms like:
- Uncoordinated movement
And so on..
If you notice any of these symptoms, it is a good idea to stop the running session and take your corgi away from the sun.
It is also a good idea to contact the vet as well in that case.
7. Watch Out For Signs Of Discomfort
In case your corgi is under any pain or discomfort, you have to halt the running session of your corgi.
It might be a sign of a pulled muscle or excessive pressure on the spine.
In that case, you will have to once again consult a vet to diagnose and solve the problem.
8. Give Joint Supplements To Your Corgi
Many pet owners like to take their corgi out for a run on a regular basis.
If you, too, are planning the same, it is a good idea to contact your vet for joint supplements.
Regular joint supplements will ensure that they do not suffer from any bone-related problems.
However, you should always get them prescribed from the vet rather than choose any joint supplement for your corgi.
9. Do Not Encourage Puppies To Run
As I have highlighted above, if the corgi is less than 18 months of age, you shouldn’t take your corgi with you for a run.
Corgis lesser than 18 months of age are easy to carry around as well.
That is why, if you want to go anywhere, it is a good idea to carry your corgi with you.
10. Prevent Older Corgis From Running
Similarly, corgis over the age of 7 years should not be taken for a run. The reason for the same is because their bones get weak and susceptible after a certain age.
That age is 7 years. Beyond that, if corgis continue running, it can lead to an injury.
It is a good idea to take them for a walk rather than a run.
11. Avoid Running Sessions If Your Corgi Is Recuperating
In case your corgi is recovering from a disease or surgery or any kind of treatment, you should completely forbid the running session.
You have to let them rest for as much time as possible.
12. Help Corgis Expend Energy Through Other Exercises
One of the best ways to discourage corgis from running excessively is to help them expand their energy.
You can play with them and exercise with them by playing fetch ball, moving around the yard and so on.
Once you help them expend their energy, they will not run excessively.
With the help of these few tips, you can limit the runs of your corgi. You can help them maintain optimum health as well.
So, corgis can achieve speeds of up to 25 mph and cover a distance of 2 to 3 miles in a single running session.
With my guide above, you can not only help corgis run to expend their energy but also help them avoid injury as well.
